DNA profiling allows for the direct examination of the genetic material that is passed from parent to child to determine paternity or maternity with greater than 99.9% certainty.  Although preferable to include the mother, it is still possible to determine paternity when the mother is not available for testing (motherless testing).  Paternity can also be determined when the man alleged to be the father is not available, by testing the alleged paternal grandparents and/or siblings of the man.
